Magnetic Samarium Cobalt Magnets (Rare Earth Magnets)
SAMARIUM COBALT MAGNETS
Samarium Cobalt Magnets are commonly used magnets in high quality jewelry where rusting is to be avoided in a very high power magnet. Samarium Cobalt magnets are a very expensive magnet, very brittle, and thus more labor intensive to manufacture.
Material Gauss Rating: 11,000 gauss. On the average a samarium cobalt magnet used in jewelry will measure 1000 – 2500 gauss depending on its size.
Samarium-cobalt magnets (SmCo5), is one type of Rare Earth Magnets, that is composed of samarium and cobalt. They have been available since the early 1970s. This sort of rare-earth magnet is very powerful, however they are also very brittle and prone to cracking and chipping. Although more expensive and not as powerful as neodymium magnets, samarium-cobalt magnets have a higher Curie temperature and can be used for higher-temperature industrial applications.
Samarium Cobalt Magnet Attributes
High resistance to demagnetization
High energy (magnetic strength is strong for its size)
Good temperature stability (maximum use temperatures between 250 and 350 °C; Curie temperatures from 700 to 800 °C)
Expensive material (cobalt is market price sensitive)
Properties of Samarium Cobalt Magnets
Density: 8.4 g/cm³
Electrical Resistivity 0.8×10-4 Ω·cm
Coefficient of thermal expansion (perpendicular to axis): 12.5 µm/(m·K)
Cautions
All samarium cobalt magnets should be kept out of reach of small children. Any magnets should also be stored away from electrical appliances, magnetic (e.g. bank) cards and cathode ray tubes (e.g. some televisions and computer displays), as damage may be irreparable. Keep away from all medical devices.
Usage Warnings: Persons fitted with pacemakers, defibrillators, implanted insulin pumps or other electro-medical devices should keep magnetic therapy products at least 18"(45cm) from the device. Do not place magnetic therapy products in direct contact with computer discs, audio/video tapes and credit cards. Pregnant women should consult their health care professional before using magnetic therapy products. The information on this Web site or in emails is designed for educational purposes only.
